The Bride

Heather Danielle Frisbie

I was born and raised in Independence, MO. Growing up with a younger sister (Amber) there was never a dull moment! After High School I stayed at home to complete my associates at a local Community College to figure out what I wanted to study. While there I made the decision to become a teacher. Working full time I took evening classes and received my Bachelors in Elementary Education from Graceland University (Independence Campus). I immediately started teaching 5th grade for the Independence School District. The next year I was lucky to receive a position in the 6th Grade Center; I just had to decide if I wanted to teach History or Computers. Knowing History was definitely not my favorite I went for Computers (not knowing what I was getting myself into). The first year was easy, just keyboarding and Microsoft Office. However, the next year our school grew to include 7th and 8th graders, so I had to step my computer skills up a notch! I spent the next couple of years learning and teaching web design. During this time I was also completing my Masters in Educational Technology. After 4 years in the school district I knew it was time to move on. As much as I loved the students, and what I was teaching I needed to learn more. The only way for me to grow and reach the next level was to take another career path. I transitioned into teaching web design to adults at a local training company. From there I moved into higher education at Grantham University where I currently administer our web portal and learning management system. I absolutely love what I'm doing and learn more every day. In addition to working in our IT department I'm an adjunct faculty member for our online Student Success course. After the wedding I hope to start taking some more classes and begin teaching additional classes online. I was lucky to land a job at Grantham, because it led me to my friend Gretchen who introduced me to Scott!

The Groom

Scott Marshall Barkes

I was born in Topeka, Kansas, on August 28, 1978. My parents are Dave and Kathy Barkes, who still live in the same house I grew up in, which is outside of Topeka, in Tecumseh, Kansas. I have an older sister, Jamie Pursley, who is married to Aaron Pursley, and lives in Lawrence, Kansas, along with my niece Kayden, who is 5. I attended Shawnee Heights High School, where I graduated in 1997. In high school, I played tennis, one year of golf and football, sang in the choir, was in two musicals, and was senior class president. After high school, I went to Kansas State University, where I attained a Bachelor’s of Science in secondary education. I was in the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta, and worked as a waiter at a restaraunt. I moved to the Kansas City area after college, where I worked as a part-time substitute teacher and part-time for my Dad’s construction company. Not wanting to be a teacher, I later worked for two years at a retail store on the Plaza called Lucky Brand Jeans. I went from there to the job I am currently at for the last 5 years, which is an assistant manager at the Sherwin-Williams paint store in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. I am an avid golfer, though don’t play as much as I would like! I play on a men’s slow pitch softball team as well. I am a big fan of the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, and also the K-State football and basketball teams. Go Cats!! In my 20’s, I used to dj electronic dance music with friends at some local Kansas City bars and clubs. I still help out friends and family, dj’ing weddings and other events when I can.

How We Met...

As told by Scott

I'll never forget the moment when she walked in the door. We met on December 11, 2009. I was hosting a holiday party at my house with a bunch of friends. One of my best friends, Gretchen, worked at Grantham University. She had told me about a girl she knew at work that I needed to meet. The night of the holiday party, Gretchen alerted me she would be coming over. This slipped my mind as the party got underway. Later on in the night, the door opens and a girl I had never seen before walks in. This new arrival confidently strides directly through a group of total strangers and promptly says hello to anyone and everyone she sees, like they are long lost friends (those of you that know Heather won't be surprised by this). I was the only person who seemed to notice this strange and odd behavior. To say the least, I was intrigued. Shortly after, we were introduced to each other. We hit it off pretty good. We talked, we danced, and I was hooked! The next night was the Grantham University holiday party. My friend Mike and I were going to be the DJ's. I was a bit nervous about it, because Heather was the person in charge of the party! It ended up being a great night, and we were able to hang out and dance some more. I was able to build up the courage to ask her for her number, and soon after I asked her on a date. We went on our first date a week later. I took her out to Lydia's in downtown Kansas City. It's a very nice Italian restaurant in the Crossroads arts district. We had a great time at dinner and later went for drinks at Grinders, an eclectic little bar and pizza place. We talked all night. I didn't want the night to end! A week later was Christmas, which I spent in Topeka with my family. I had to work the next day, so I planned on driving home Christmas night. The only problem was the 12 inches of snow that fell that day. I decided to attempt the one hour drive in my 4 wheel drive SUV. Shortly upon plowing through 2 and 3 foot snowdrifts on my parents' street, I get a text from Heather inviting me over to her house. I couldn't turn that down! So I headed on my way to her place, driving slow through the snow-packed streets and highways, until I get to what appears to be a cleared highway 635 in Kansas City. I lost control of the car on a patch of black ice and rammed the concrete divider in the middle of the highway, totaling my car. Luckily I was unharmed, only shaken up. I called Heather and told her about the accident. She drove out with her sister and roommate, and they stayed with me for 2 hours while I waited for a tow truck. That is how we spent our first Christmas together!! From there, it was more dates and hanging out together. It didn't take me long to see what a fantastic and amazing person she is. Over the next few weeks we became inseparable, until one night in January, when we were watching the K-State basketball game, and I had had a few beers. I couldn't stop myself from confessing to her that I loved her, through and through!!

The Proposal

As told by Heather

Scott sent me a Dinner Party evite titled "Celebrate our Anniversary and our New Home!". It was to be a romantic night of dinner and games. October 15th arrived and I came home from work to find candles burning all over the house with a beautiful flower bouquet on the table. Scott prepared a fabulous crab leg dinner while I was able to sit and enjoy a glass of wine! We had a wonderful dinner together and then cuddled on the couch with a couple games of Phase 10. After awhile he said he had to go upstairs for something, and I followed him. He was acting a little strange, and a little frustrated with the fact that I had followed him. At this point I was still clueless! After we both returned to the couch he pulled out a large book. As he handed me the book I saw a picture of us on the front with the title, "Scott and Heather: A Love Story...". At this point I thought something might be coming! We sat together as I read the amazing book that Scott had put together highlighting our lives together thus far with photos along the way. My heart was beating faster and faster as I approached the end. When I turned to the last page it read, "Only one more thing left to do to seal the deal...It's time." As I looked up he was on his knee and I immediately starting crying with tears of joy! Of course I said "Yes" with no hesitation! As I don't recall the words he actually said at that moment the next thing I knew was that I had a beautiful ring around my finger! I knew from that point I was going to be the happiest girl ever!
